Top 3 Natural Gas ETFs for 2020

Energy has been a volatile sector over the past few years. As of mid-January, 2020, the S&P Goldman Sachs Commodity Index (SPGSCI)—which tracks 24 exchange-traded futures contracts that cover physical commodities over five sectors, with a weighting in energy—is posting a 6.66% one-year return. But the S&P 500 Energy (stocks included in the S&P 500 that are classified as members of the energy sector) is reporting a loss of 0.88% in terms of one-year returns.

Natural gas prices provide one segment of the market for speculation. Despite challenges in the energy market overall, America’s energy companies continue to do a great job producing natural gas far more cheaply than they have in the past, finding ways to make a profit even under today’s depressed oil and gas prices. While oil prices have only slightly gained from market lows, the outlook for energy is slowly improving with many commodity prices gaining across the market.

Therefore, adding exposure to natural gas may make sense as part of a well-diversified investment strategy. For investors, there are several natural gas exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that can be used for staking a position in the commodity. Out of the seven that exist, here’s a look at the three of the most actively traded for potential investment in 2020.

Gas production soared in the United States (+11.5%), the largest gas producer accounting for 45% of the worldwide increase, pushed by recent developments in the Permian Basin and Haynesville Shale formations and by domestic consumption. Shale gas in the US now accounts for around 70% of the country’s gas production.
Gas production surged in Russia (+6.7% in 2020), spurred by a strong growth in domestic demand, and in Iran, following the start-up of new phases in the South Pars fields projects.
Australia’s gas production continued to ramp up (+15%) thanks to the commissioning of new LNG trains in 2020 and 2020.
Gas production grew at a very fast pace (+20%) in Egypt, as new phases of the West Nile Delta project are started up.
In Europe, gas production continued to fall (-15%) as the Netherlands is cutting national output.

Global renewable capacity rose by 176 GW in 2020

According to the IRENA, the global renewable capacity increased by 7.4% in 2020, when 176 GW of new projects were commissioned, raising the global renewable capacity to 2,537 GW. More than half of the new renewable capacities were installed in Asia (95.5 GW, corresponding to a 9% growth), followed by Europe (+35 GW, +6.6%), North America (+22 GW, +6%), South America (+8.4 GW, +4%), Oceania (+6.2 GW, +18%), Eurasia (+3.1 GW, +3%), the Middle east (+2.5 GW, +13%), Africa (+2 GW, +4.3%) and Central America (+0.6 GW, +4.1%).

Global wind capacity increased by over 60 GW in 2020

According to the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), a total of 60.4 GW of wind capacity was installed worldwide in 2020 (19% more than in 2020), raising the global wind capacity by 10% to more than 650 GW.

India’s carbon-free generation capacity rose by 72% over 2020

According to the Indian government, the installed carbon-free capacity in the country increased by 72% between late March 2020 and the end of February 2020, from 81 GW to 139 GW. Around 55% of new installations between 2020 and 2020 (58 GW) were solar power plants (32 GW), followed by wind (17 GW, 29%) and large hydro (5 GW, 8%). In addition, 2.8 GW of other renewable sources (biomass, small-hydropower and waste-to-energy) and 2 GW of nuclear were added. Total investment in the Indian carbon-free energy sector reached US$75bn over the 2020 period, with foreign direct investments accounting for 8% of it (US$6bn).

Global offshore wind capacity rose by 6.1 GW in 2020

According to the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), the global offshore wind power capacity increased by 6.1 GW to 29.5 GW in 2020. Offshore wind installations accelerated compared with 2020, when 4.5 GW were added, and accounted for 10% of the new wind power installations.
